In Morocco, there is no shortage of people offering to build websites: freelance developers, small agencies, more structured agencies. Prices vary widely and the choice is not always obvious. There is no universal right answer: a freelancer can be the best choice for one project, an agency for another. Here is how to decide based on your situation.
Working with a freelancer
The strengths
- Often a lower price: fewer overheads.
- A single contact, who does the work personally.
- Flexibility for small adjustments.
- Sharp expertise when the freelancer specialises in what you need.
The limits
- Limited availability: one project at a time, or several in parallel.
- A continuity risk: illness, a change of career, a move abroad… and your website has no one technically in charge any more.
- Inevitably limited skills: few people are good at design, development, writing and SEO all at once.
- Sometimes uncertain deadlines when several clients compete for their time.
Working with a web agency
The strengths
- A complete team: project manager, designer, developers, SEO specialist.
- Continuity: if someone is away, the project and the maintenance carry on.
- A proven process: scoping, mock-ups, testing, launch, training.
- The ability to grow the website into an online shop, an application or integrations.
- A more formal contractual framework: detailed quote, schedule, guarantees.
The limits
- A higher price, which reflects the team and the organisation.
- More people involved, sometimes less closeness if the agency is very large.
- Very uneven quality from one agency to the next: the word “agency” guarantees nothing by itself.
Cost: compare like with like
As a guide, at IT LABS PRO a showcase website costs 4,000 to 9,000 MAD and a multi-page or multilingual business website 14,000 to 18,000 MAD (see our guide to website costs in Morocco in 2026). A freelancer may quote less, but compare the same scope:
- is the design custom or based on a template?
- is copywriting included?
- is basic SEO (titles, speed, tags) included?
- are training, documentation and maintenance included?
- what will a change cost in six months?
The cost that matters is the cost of the website over several years, not just the cost of building it.
The question of maintenance
A website has to be maintained: security updates, backups, fixes, small improvements. That is often where the difference shows. Ask each provider how they handle maintenance, how quickly they respond to a problem, and who takes over when they are away.
Which choice for your situation?
A freelancer may be enough if…
- you need a simple showcase website on a tight budget;
- you already know the freelancer, their work and their reliability;
- you can manage the project and supply the content and mock-ups yourself.
An agency is a better fit if…
- your website is an important sales tool (quote requests, sales);
- you need several skills: design, development, SEO, content;
- your project includes e-commerce, several languages or custom features;
- you want maintenance guaranteed over time.
The decision checklist
- Look at live websites similar to your project.
- Read customer reviews (on Google in particular) and talk to a former client.
- Ask for a detailed quote with a schedule and deliverables.
- Check that the domain name, hosting and access will be in your name.
- Clarify maintenance and the cost of future changes.
- Judge the quality of the conversation from the very first meeting.
To structure your needs, our guide to writing a requirements document will help, and our article on how to choose a web agency in Morocco details the selection criteria.
Warning signs
Whether you choose a freelancer or an agency, some signs should make you think twice before signing:
- no work you can look at online, or only screenshots;
- a quote with no detail: a single total and no list of pages or features;
- a price far below every other quote, with no explanation;
- a refusal to put the domain name and hosting in your name;
- no questions about your business: a good provider first tries to understand your goals;
- slow replies even before you have signed.
Questions to ask every provider
- Can you show me three live websites similar to mine?
- Who will actually work on my project?
- What is included in the quote, and what is optional?
- How do mock-up approval and testing work?
- Will the website be optimised for mobile and for Google?
- Will I be able to edit my content myself?
- What happens after launch: maintenance, changes, response times?
- Who will own the website, the code and the access?
The answers, and the way they are given, often tell you more than the quote itself.
When the project grows
Many websites start simple and grow: a blog, then a shop, then a customer area, then a connection to the management software. If your project has that ambition, choose from the start a provider able to follow you through those stages, or at least a technology and documentation that will let someone else take over.
Frequently asked questions
Is a freelancer always cheaper?
Often for the build, not always over time: maintenance, changes and the risk of another provider having to take over the website can reverse the picture.
What happens if my provider disappears?
If the domain name, hosting and access are in your name and the code is documented, another provider can take over the website. Otherwise, you may have to start again from scratch.
Can an agency work with my current freelancer?
Yes, some collaborations work very well: the freelancer keeps part of the work and the agency brings the missing skills or the maintenance.
In short
A freelancer suits simple projects with a tight budget that you manage yourself; an agency brings a full team, a process and continuity for projects that matter to your business. Either way, judge on their work, their reviews, the clarity of the quote and the maintenance. Discover our website development in Morocco.
