“Website” and “web application” are often used interchangeably. Yet they do not meet the same need, are not designed the same way and do not cost the same. Understanding the difference helps you describe your project and choose the right provider.

A website: inform and convince

A website is first and foremost a source of information. It presents a company, its history, its business, its services or its products. Visitors browse it: they read text, look at images, perhaps fill in a contact form. They interact mainly with the content.

Examples: a company showcase website, a blog, a website presenting a hotel or a practice.

A web application: get tasks done

A web application is a program you use in a browser. Users do not just read: they enter data, change it, run processes and get personalised results. They interact with the tool itself, often after logging in.

Examples: online invoicing software, a booking tool, a customer area, an order management platform.

When to choose one or the other?

Do you want to be found on Google, present your offer and receive quote requests? You need a website. Do you want customers to place orders and follow their files, or your teams to manage their work online? You need a web application. And very often the answer is “both”: a public website to attract people, connected to an application that serves customers and teams.
